Elf on the Shelf questions

When does the elf arrive?

Most families have the elf arrive on 1 December or the day after Thanksgiving, then leave on Christmas Eve. There is no fixed rule — pick a date that suits your family.

What if I forget to move the elf?

It happens to everyone. Use one of our last-minute ideas (all five minutes or less), or say the elf was so comfy they stayed put to watch the family.

Can you touch the elf?

In the traditional story, touching the elf makes it lose its magic. Many families relax this rule for younger children or let the elf recover overnight with a sprinkle of “cinnamon magic”.

How do I keep coming up with ideas?

Plan ahead with our 24-day plan: one idea for every day from 1 to 24 December, with arrival and goodbye days built in.
